Dry and light, it’s a good choice with a wide variety of our dishes. See the story of the “Rex Goliath” under the section entitled “House Reds.” 67 Rivaner Rheinhessen '03 Qualitätswein Black Tower 18.00Sometimes you want something easy, something casual, something fresh. Black Tower, the time honored classic German wine, fits the bill. Black Tower is a medium dry white wine made from one of Germany's most distinguished grapes: the Rivaner. The Rivaner grapes used for making Black Tower are grown in Rheinhessen, an area of gently rolling hills neighboring the Rhine Valley. It is an ideal setting with a particularly mild climate, producing some of Germany's great wines. Black Tower's Rivaner grapes are crushed gently and fermented slowly to retain a grapey yet floral fragrance. The result is a wine that has a consistent, delicate balance of fresh and crisp fruit flavors with just a hint of spice 68 Sauvignon Blanc '03 Wildekrans Walker Bay South Africa 20.00Sprightly, food-friendly style; distant echoes of grass, nettle; bone dry, but easy to drink. 57 Sauvignon Blanc '04 Anakena (Argentina) 20.00Fragrant citrus and stone fruit on the nose with a touch of grassy, citrus blossom. This is the perfect wine to enjoy with our spicier foods. Bright nectarine and zesty grapefruit flavors lead to a crisp, dry wine with the fresh hay notes typical of the variety. The wine has a long, complex finish. 108 Blanc de Blanc '02 "Clairette" Grover Vineyards - India 20.00This is a noble Indian white wine made from the Clairette varietal. This wine is exquisite with our fuller-flavored, spicy dishes, whether fish, fowl or meat. Peach and apricot aromas disclose similar flavours on the palate. Austere, with a fine finish, this Clairette-alone wine is rare. Typically, Clairette grapes are used with others in the white and rose wines of the Rhone Valley, Provence, and Languedoc-Roussillon. 108 Chardonnay Feudo Arancio (Italy)... 24.00Marvelously faithful to the varietal with no-frills (little oak integration to interfere with the flavours of our food), this wine comes from Feudo Arancio, the most sophisticated new winemaker in Sicily. This is Chard with an Italian flair that’s fun to drink! 96 Liebfraumilch '03 "Leapfrogmilch" Frog's Leap Vineyards CA.. 27.00The perfect companion to our cuisine, this wine begins with aromas of white flowers and apricot, while across the palate the wine reveals a variety of fruit flavors from grapefruit and citrus to apple and pear. A touch of wet stone – punctuated by the wine’s acidity – drives the long, clean finish. You’ll have fun drinking this wine from a serious winery that nonetheless enjoys a good pun when the opportunity is too good to pass up. 83 Sauvignon Blanc '03 "Marlborough" Kim Crawford Wines, New Zealand. 30.00Consistently highly rated in the wine press, our customers who know this wine squeal with delight (well, maybe not squeal) when they discover that it’s to be had here. The low mark-up makes the experience all the more delightful! The wine displays classic Sauvignon characters of gooseberry, passionfruit, figs and a touch of herbaceousness. The palate is full bodied with rich, ripe fruit balanced with crisp acidity. A stylish wine with good fruit intensity. 91 Viognier Doux '02 Bonny Doon Vineyards, Napa, CA. 31.00This off-dry wine has a remarkably intense aroma. It will stand by itself for cocktail drinking, or pair marvelously with the most spicy dishes. Let’s let the winemaker say more: “Despite our protestations to the contrary, we Americans are well known for our love of the sweet stuff. French drinkers of viognier in the first half of the last century were a similar lot, as much of the Condrieu made prior to WWII was either sweet or sparkling. And why not? Certain grapes readily lend themselves to being made as dessert style wines or sweet apéritifs including viognier, whose signature descriptor is a rich violet fragrance. We have adapted the traditional technique used for vin de paille whereby grapes are left after picking to desiccate and concentrate of beds of straw prior to pressing. Here we have placed the clusters in raisin trays to dry for 12 days in the vineyard before pressing. This yields a more tawny, bottom-toned wine than the format employed for vin de glacière [that’s Ice Wine, which Szechuan Tokyo proudly offers as well].” 71 Fumé Blanc '01 Robert Mondavi Napa 33.00The definition of elegance in winemaking, the Robert Mondavi 2002 Napa Valley Fumé Blanc displays bright citrus, pineapple, lemon grass, floral and mineral notes that enliven the aromas and cascade across the palate. Barrel-fermentation and gentle stirring during aging in French oak barrels enhanced the elegant, spicy finish. Because of the oak integration, this wine is best enjoyed with some of our milder offerings, particularly seafood. 82 Riesling '01 "Côte de Rouffach" Réne Muré (Alsace) 34.00The nose is fine, with aromas of lime and tangerine. The taste abounds with ripe citrus fruits and white peach. The structure of the wine shows a nice acidity, enveloped by richness. Blush Wines20 White Zinfandel NV Sutter Home, CA... 20.00Our only White Zinfandel – approachable and sweet without being cloying 15 Rose '03 Wolffer Vineyards, Southampton, NY... 22.00The color is orange with a copper hue. This is another classic Wölffer Rosé. Vibrant aromas of ripe strawberries and blueberries, with hints of lime and mint, fill the glass. This is a rich, yet elegantly dry wine with layers of fruit accented with perfectly balanced acidity. The finish is lively with mineral notes and refreshing vibrancy making the wine particularly food-friendly. 19 Tavel '02 Domaine Longval.. 22.00Just west of Avignon in the scenic southern Rhône Valley, the town of Tavel has long been synonymous with pleasant, fruity and immensely likeable rosé wines. The Domaine de Longval, just outside the village, was for many years the property of the late Georges Bernard, a classic and traditional winemaker whose style stressed grace and drinkability - two characteristics essential to good rosé. Domaine de Longval is a bright, fresh rosé with crisp acidity. Particularly refreshing during summer, it is most enjoyable well chilled, either as an aperitif or with virtually any casual fare. 113 Rose d' Anjou '03 Remy Pannier (Loire Valley) 18.00Anjou wine comes from around the city of Angers on the Loire River. Remy Pannier is the producer. The grapes are a blend of Cabernet Franc and Grolleau and the wine is vinified to be semi-sweet or off dry. Champagnes and Sparkling Wine1 Taittinger La Francaise ‘03.. 148.00A blend of Chardonnay wines (40%) and Pinot wines (60%) from 40 different vineyards and matured to perfection. Such a high proportion of Chardonnay is seldom found among the great champagnes. The colour is brilliant, golden straw yellow. The bubbles are fine. The mousse is both discreet and persistent. The nose, very expressive and open, is both fruity and bready. It exudes aromas of peach, white flowers (may blossom, acacia) and vanilla pod. On the palate, this lively fresh wine is at once in harmony. This is a delicate wine with flavours of fresh fruit and honey. In all, a wine blessed with a well-developed aromatic potential. It is aged for three to four years in the cellars where it achieves perfect maturity. 3 Brut Korbel (CA) 32.00Korbel Brut is America's favorite bottle-fermented champagne. It is used to celebrate more weddings, anniversaries, and New Years celebrations than any other quality champagne. Korbel Brut is light and crisp, with spicy fruit flavors. It is finished with a 1% dosage for a balanced medium-dry finish. Korbel Brut is perfect for every celebration and many meals. Try it with chicken dishes, oriental foods, especially those using lemon grass or mild curries. Korbel Brut is also great served with many fruits and milder cheeses. 8 Mumm Napa Blanc De Noir (CA)... 60.006 Mumm Cuvee Napa (CA)... 60.005 Mumm Brut "Cordon Rouge" N/V France 65.00Ice Wine9 Covey Run Ice Wine Riesling '01 (375ml) ... 37.00Sweet with a streak of racy acidity, flavors of stone fruit and floral notes from the 20% Gewurztraminer in the blend. Made from frozen late harvest grapes, which makes it affordable and delicious. This unique wine is filled with rich flavors of apricot, creating a very sweet dessert wine. One of the most unique wines in the Covey Run Reserve series, this Ice Wine has a wonderful aroma of apricots and honey with a luscious, creamy mouthfeel. You can also find bright acidity and a long finish. Food affinities: A golden treasure and a true treat, when you are able to find this wine, it is best when served alone. Or try paired with nuts, biscotti or peaches. It has all of the wonderful qualities of a great dessert: color, intensity, flavor and aroma. Red Wines29 Cabernet Sauvignon '01 Rex Goliath CA.. 20.00This is a hearty Cabernet Sauvignon with structure and concentration. Dark and intense in color. Hints of cedar and oak, with layers of raspberry, plum, mocha, and currant. Firm tannins with big fruit flavors lead to a lengthy and persistent finish. 39 Merlot Rex Goliath CA 20.00Soft, supple, and complex. There is a certain elegance to this wine that fits my vision of the perfect Merlot: Pretty and seductive with a decidedly spicy nose of black cherry, cassis and cedar. Very ripe and round, almost like a Jolly Rancher candy. Mouth-filling flavors of plums, cherries and wild red berries dominate from start to finish. Good seam of acidity paired with soft tannins. 110 Costieres de Nimes '03 Chateau Montroche 20.00Costiere du Nimes Rouge. Half and half Grenache and Syrah. No oak in this wine, just pure, lovely, unadulterated fruit. Each time we've opened it, we sell out. Serious wine enthusiasts who turn their nose up at a 20.00 wine do a double take: ''You said it costs how much?'' Further proof why I search all over for great values for our customers! 38 Blend: Shiraz/Cab Aquila "Flame" Australia. 21.00Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Blackwood Valley and Margaret River have combined to create this ruby coloured medium bodied wine. Rich aromas of strawberry and cherry are carried through onto the palate. Full in the mouth with soft smooth tannins leading to a clean finish with lingering flavours of berry. 43 Petit Syrah '01 Bogle Vineyards, Clarksburg, CA. 25.00First produced in 1978 by the Bogle family, this 2001 vintage shows just how far the winery has come. Amazingly inky, deep purple wine emerges from the bottle as you pour a glass. On the nose, luscious boysenberry scents mingle with traces of cedar and black pepper. Trademark jammy notes fill the mouth with ripe fruit and berries. The voluptuous finish lingers with toasty, vanilla oak and lush fruit. The firm tannins make this a wine that can develop for years to come, but you won’t want to wait that long to enjoy it! 102 Blend N/V "Jest Red" Jest Vineyards, Sonoma, CA 25.0089 Points, "Wine Enthusiast" November 15, 2002. "Great Deals & Downright Steals." This non-vintage wine cunningly mixes up a sorcerer's brew of odd lots and leftover barrels-"orphans," as the winemaker describes them. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Sirah, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir. Syrah and Zinfandel are all present and accounted for, drawn from 550 acres in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Dark, smooth and sweetly scented with violets and blueberries, it is a pretty, juicy bottle of ripe berries and plums. Smooth and succulent, it rolls into a satiny, lip-licking finish. 31 Claret '01 "Stags Leap" Steltzner Vineyards Napa, CA 35.00This wine is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 30% Merlot. This wine is a young bright violet in the glass -- we're talking really purple -- with a nose that includes aromas of licorice, cherry cola, and some light floral notes likely from the Cabernet Franc in the blend. In the mouth it is lively and bright with very light tannins and good acidity underscoring primary flavors of cherries, and what can only be described as Dr. Pepper notes. The finish is solid and satisfying. I'd say this is a great example of the Claret style and a likely crowd pleaser not to mention a great value. 25 Cabernet Sauvignon '00 Aquila Vineyards (AUS) 27.00The familiar flavours of Margaret River have been combined with the unique characteristics of Blackwood Valley cabernet sauvignon. Rich, layered aromas predominated by dark chocolate with almond kernel and dried herbs shape this complex bouquet- whist 15 months oak maturation provides the backbone for this rich and succulent wine. A fine balance between fruit flavours, firm tannin structure and oak ensures a Cabernet lover’s delight! 27 Cabernet Sauvignon '01 Bogle Vineyards, Clarksburg, CA... 34.00Cabernet Sauvignon is a grape that takes its own sweet time, slowly lingering to ripen on the vine. We are rewarded by its reluctance. Ripe, bright cherries open up on the palate, with a hint of dried herbs and eucalyptus nestled among the fruit. Fourteen months in American barrels produced a well-integrated profile of spicy oak and rich tobacco. Firm but forgiving tannins leave a most welcome finish after each sip. 26 Cabernet Sauvignon '00 Steltzner Vineyards Napa, CA 40.00Stags Leap District, Napa Valley, CA -- Steltzner Vineyards' first release was in 1977, but Richard Steltzner established his first Stags Leap District vineyards in 1965. Steltzner Cabernet Sauvignon is dark ruby red in color with a beautiful nose of ripe black cherry, blackberry, vanilla, and toasty oak. Dry and full-bodied with moderate acidity and soft, rich tannins, this Cab shows rich flavors of blackberries, cherries, cocoa, vanilla, and spice. Oak is beautifully integrated. Opulent, structured and complex, the wine is beautifully balanced to enjoy now, with gentle tannins. 103 Chianti Classico Riserva 1999 Castello di Querceto, Italy. 34.00Make sure to order this superior Chianti right away (or we’ll decant it for you). Wine Spectator gave this wine a 91 score and for good reason. The intense ruby red color and full and well-expressed aroma of an austere Sangiovese is a mere harbinger of the myriad layers of flavours to come. This bone-dry red is suitable for drinking with our beef dishes. The sublime, long finish is due to the winemakers’ magnificent job of integration of oak, acidity and faithfulness to style. 41 St. Estephe '97 Chateau Meyney Bordeaux Estate Bottled. Not Available: We're sourcing it now.St-Estephe is the northern most of the four most important communal appellations of the Haut-Medoc. The soils of St-Estephe contain gravel but these layers are often found on a clay base. These more poorly draining soils can be cooler, delaying ripening, and leaving the grapes higher in acidity that their more southern counterparts. The Cordier Chateau Meyney is our only estate-bottled Grand Cru Bordeaux. An austere bouquet begins this experience, a sip reveals the distinctive peppery flavor on top of sophisticated fruit layering with a zippy finish that’s memorable due to excellent tannic integration. Not necessarily recommended with any of the menu items we offer; it’s great for sipping while enjoying our jazz shows. This is one of owner Paul Lewis’s favorite wines. 21 Amarone Classico '99 Masi Costasera Winery, Italy 78.00Amarone and its sweet counterpart, Recioto, have been produced in Valpolicella since Roman times. Virgil, Suetonius, Martial and Pliny the Elder testify to their existence. The original name for these wines was “reticum”, later changed to “acinaticum” by Cassiodorous, minister of King Theodoric. We continue to find historic references during the successive centuries: during the Longobard period, the Middle Ages, the dominion of the Scaligers, as well as during the Most Serene Republic of Venice when this wine was referred to, with great pride, as a “wine of the Doges”. The term “recioto” probably comes from the dialect word “recia” which means the upper and outer parts of the bunches of grapes. These “recie” are the grapes which are ripest and which enjoy the best exposure to the sun. Another hypothesis derives the term from “recisus” which means “cut and dried”. The existence of a dry Recioto wine is attested from antiquity, even if the term “Amarone” did not make its appearance until the 18th century. The marketing of this wine on a large scale is more recent and only started during this century. The grapes are actually desiccated to approximately 40% of their original volume before being pressed, and then a tedious process of fermentation and movement “off its lees” twice from vat to barrel takes place. Amarone is a majestic wine which combines dignity with power and grace. Rice Wines from China95 Shau Hsing Hu Tiao Jar, Wenzhou, China 18.0094 Nu Er Hang Red Rice Wine, Wenzhou, China.. 20.00
